Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the arms, legs and back to prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. Candidates for SCS are those who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed. This procedure requires a trial implantation to determine effectiveness, followed by permanent implantation of electrodes and a pulse generator that is controlled remotely.
